Citing safety concerns, the federal government backed off a plan to seize 1,000 cattle from a Nevada rancher on Saturday after a number of activists came out in defense of Cliven Bundy. The rancher has reportedly failed to pay $1 million in fees to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management since 1993 that would allow his cattle to graze. Bundy says that his family’s ownership of the land predates the creation of the BLM, an organization which is controversial in some Western states for its maintenance of the land, which is treated as public by the federal government.
